Dilantin (phenytoin) is a medication in a class of drugs called anticonvulsants. It is used for the treatment of seizures. Dilantin works by decreasing atypical electrical impulses in the brain. Dilantin comes as an extended-release (long-acting) capsule, a chewable tablet and a suspension (liquid) to take by mouth, states Medline Plus.
Constipation
Constipation is a common side effect of Dilantin use. To help prevent and alleviate constipation, eat a diet high in fiber, fruits and vegetables with at least 8-10 glasses of water daily. If dietary changes fail to produce results, an over-the-counter stool softener such as Colace may be helpful. Speak to your health care provider if you are experiencing long-term constipation.
Hyperglycemia
Dilantin may cause an increase in your blood glucose (sugar) levels. Your physician may monitor your glucose levels while you use this medication. Frequent urination and increased thirst and hunger may be symptoms of hyperglycemia.
Headache and Dizziness
You may experience headache and dizziness while taking Dilantin. Use caution while driving or operating dangerous machinery until you know how this medication can affect you. Treat your headache with ibuprofen or acetaminophen as per your doctor's consent. Headache and dizziness may subside over time as your body adjusts to Dilantin.
Nausea and Vomiting
Gastrointestinal side effects for Dilantin include nausea and vomiting. Dietary changes such as limiting spicy or fried foods and eating a healthy supply of fruits, fiber and vegetables may help alleviate gastrointestinal distress. If nausea and vomiting become severe, you may be at risk for dehydration. Contact your physician if these side effects don't subside.
Severe Allergic Reaction
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips or tongue) may occur while taking Dilantin, states Drugs.com. Seek emergency medical attention if you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction.
