Chemical processing can damage your hair and leave it feeling dry and brittle. Perms and color can leave the hair lifeless and in need of serious repair. In the future, you can prevent chemical damage by limiting the amount of processing you perform on your mane. Typically, you need to wait a minimum of 6 to 8 weeks between treatments. Remember to follow any aftercare instructions provided by your stylist to limit chemical damage.
Step 1
Remove damaged and dead hair by getting a hair cut. Allow your stylist to cut off as much of the damaged hair as you are comfortable with. Keep up to date with trims every 4 to 6 weeks. Help hair grow out by avoiding hair breakage. This involves avoiding restrictive hairstyles, like buns, ponytails and braids.
Step 2
Use a clarifying shampoo. After your hair has been exposed to chemicals, including pool chemicals like chlorine, wash with a clarifying shampoo to remove buildup. Clarifying shampoos can be used on a weekly basis.
Step 3
Choose a conditioner specially formulated for dry and damaged hair. Choose formulations that are protein enhanced to help rebuild damaged hair. A deep conditioning treatment should be done weekly.
Step 4
Spritz the hair with a thermal protector. These products protect the hair from any further damage when exposing it to heat based styling tools, like flat irons, hot rollers and hair dryers. You should leave some moisture in the hair after blow drying.
Step 5
Work a small amount of mineral oil through the hair after drying. Work the oil from the roots to the tips. To help chemically damaged hair, you can perform a weekly hot oil hair treatment. The hot oil kits are sold in pharmacies and hair supply stores. You place the tube in a container of hot water for several minutes and apply to hair. Rinse after 2 to 5 minutes.
