Two-pitch baseball is a fun version of the regular game. It is played by youth and adult leagues alike, and often is a co-ed sport. The game generally follows a modified version of National Federation of State High School Associations, National Collegiate Athletic Association or Major League or Baseball Canada rules, depending on player age and the league.
Pitching
In 2 pitch, a person from the batter's own team throws the pitches. This pitcher is not required to be part of the batting order. The batter, of course, gets only two pitches. She has to hit a fair ball or she is out, according to Kelowna Adult Softball Association of British Columbia rules (KASA).
Fielding
Outfielders must throw the ball to infielders instead of to the pitcher to stop play, advises KASA. Also, only five designated infielders are allowed to put a player out a first base, and outfielders cannot throw players out at first base.
Foul Balls
Rules differ for foul balls from league to league. When a tipped or foul ball is caught, a batter is called out under KASA adult league rules. However, under Cedarview Community Church youth league rules, foul balls are considered out of play even when they can be caught.
Fly Balls and Homers
Runners are not allowed to advance with a caught fly ball. They also cannot be thrown out in this situation. Instead, runners get a free pass back to the base they occupied. Some leagues allow only one "over the fence" home run per batter per game. A second home run results in a ground rule double, according to Cedarview.
Batting and Running
Some 2-pitch leagues allow no chopping or bunting. Runners also are restricted from leaving a base prior to the batter hitting the ball. Those who do so are declared out.
Home Plate
In most 2-pitch leagues, runners do not touch home plate. Those who do so are out. Instead, in the Cedarview league, runners cross a line that's even with home plate. KASA players touch a mat that's behind home plate.
