1. Road Running Means Different Running
Road running presents different challenges than other types of running. Running on a track is easier because the path is in front of you; running on the road means watching out for traffic and potholes while still trying to maintain your running stride and speed. Many runners enjoy road running because of the varied scenery and added challenge it offers.
2. Be Aware of Motorists
Road running and traffic aren't a good combination. As a runner on the road, you should be aware of cars around you and make sure they're aware of you. For your safety, run against the flow of traffic. This will guarantee that you can see oncoming cars and avoid them, and it will also let you watch out for any erratic drivers or traffic problems that might slow you down. Run a safe distance away from moving cars and pay attention to all traffic signs and signals.
3. Safety on the Road
There are many road running safety tips to remember. Run on roads you're familiar with. If you know the road, you'll be aware of turns, potholes, construction or anything else that could obstruct you. Keep your head up to stay aware of your surroundings. Don't wear headphones while running so you can hear horns or sirens. Remember you "see" almost as much with your ears as your eyes when you run in public. Leave your dog at home when you run on the road.
4. Dress for the Road
Road running gear must stand up to the weather and keep you safe. Buy sturdy shoes that are water resistant with heavy treads on the soles. Invest in running gear with brightly colored or reflective material, or buy a reflective vest to wear over your running clothes. This will ensure that passing cars can see you no matter what time of day you run. A hat will protect you from the sun, but make sure you wear one that doesn't obscure your peripheral vision.
5. Be Safe Together
When you're in a group. run single file or in pairs so that your group remains a safe distance from passing vehicles. Have everyone in the group choose a partner to keep an eye on so that everyone is accounted for. Choose roads with large paths on the side so that everyone is a safe distance away from the path of traffic.
