Making salves at home is easy, inexpensive and takes little time and effort. A basic salve recipe can be made and then customized to your liking by including herbs, essential oils and other natural products that help to sooth and smooth dry and irritated skin. Minor adjustments to the recipe can also create a salve that is softer and easier to apply or harder and longer lasting. With a little practice, you'll be able to create a salve that is uniquely yours.
Step 1
Place three clean spoons in the refrigerator to chill for later use in testing the consistency of the salve.
Step 2
Pour the olive oil into a sauce pan and warm it enough to prevent the beeswax from hardening, when added.
Step 3
Melt the beeswax in a double boiler. Pour the wax into the oil in the sauce pan and mix them thoroughly. Add any combination of essential oils that you prefer to the olive oil and beeswax mixture and combine them thoroughly. Take the mixture off the heat.
Step 4
Remove one of the spoons from the refrigerator and insert it into the oil and beeswax mixture. Allow the mixture to cool on the spoon to test the consistency of the salve. For a stiffer salve, add more beeswax. For a softer salve, add more olive oil. Continue to test after adding more ingredients, until the desired consistency is achieved.
Step 5
Pour the still-hot mixture into opaque containers for storage. Cover the containers loosely with wax paper, to prevent unwanted water condensation, until the salve has completely cooled. Cap and label the containers.
