Your body will undergo major changes in the first month of pregnancy on the inside, while it may appear that not much is going on from the outside. You can better manage those changes if you understand why they're happening. Awareness will also help you know when something isn't right and when to see your health care provider.
Breast Tenderness
Many women experience breast tenderness and/or swelling as one of the first symptoms of pregnancy. Your breasts may feel and appear fuller or enlarged and they may become tender to the touch. Wearing a good supportive bra that fits well may help. The areola--or dark circle around your nipple--may become darker as well. Both changes are due to your pregnancy hormones.
Profound Fatigue
Your body is beginning the journey of growing and protecting your baby until he's ready to survive on his own. As that work is being done, you may begin to feel your heart race as your heart pumps faster and harder to keep up with the demands of pregnancy. Because your body is using so much energy to work harder and to grow your baby, you will become unusually tired. You may find it hard to make it through the day without a nap or feel tired even after just waking. Be sure to eat a well-balanced diet, exercise daily and rest when you can.
Dizziness or Feeling Faint
Because your heart is working harder to meet the demands of growing your baby you may begin to have spells of dizziness or faintness. Not only is your heart working harder, it's actually pumping nearly 20 percent more volume than before you became pregnant. The extra blood and fluids are produced to help accommodate the needs of both you and the baby--but they can also contribute to occasional dizziness and fainting spells. Stress, fatigue and hunger are all possible contributors as well.
If you are feeling faint or dizzy, sit or lay down on your side immediately--lying on your back may increase your feelings of dizziness. You may also want to try getting up slowly from a sitting or lying position to allow your body time to adjust to the change.
