Diclofenac sodium is a commonly prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain associated with arthritis, joint inflammation and migraines. Diclofenac sodium is most often taken orally in pill form. Most of the side effects of diclofenac are mild; however, some side effects can be dangerous.
Mild Side Effects
According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common side effects of diclofenac sodium include weakness, ringing in the ears, bloating and gaseousness. These side effects are usually mild and do not pose a danger to those using diclofenac. Let your doctor know if these or any other side effects persist or lead to long-term discomfort.
Cardiovascular Side Effects
As reported by Drugs.com, there have been rare reports of serious cardiac side effects while using diclofenac. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any cardiac symptoms while using diclofenac including chest pain, increased pulse, shortness of breath or flushing of the skin.
Skin Reactions
Dangerous side effects of diclofenac can also manifest as skin reactions. The National Institutes of Health lists skin-related side effects of diclofenac use, including loosening of the skin, alterations on skin color, yellowing of the skin and the appearance of hives.
Gastrointestinal Side Effects
Diclofenac has a number of rare but potentially serious side effects on the stomach and GI tract. The National Institutes of Health explains that side effects related to the GI tract can be a sign of a dangerous reaction and should be reported to a medical professional. Peptic ulcers are the most common long-term GI side effect of diclofenac use. More acute GI side effects of diclofenac include diarrhea, nausea, bloody or tar-like stools, intestinal bleeding and difficulties with urination.
Severe Allergic Reactions
Severe allergic reactions, also referred to as "anaphylactic shock," to Diclofenac are rare but very serious. Seek emergency attention if you experience any anaphylactic symptoms while using Diclofenac. The National Institutes of Health and Mayo Clinic list warning sign of anaphylaxis as wheezing and swelling, rapid pulse, shortness of breath and faintness.
