5 Things You Need to Know About Changing Adult Diapers

1. When Adults Need Diapers

Changing adult diapers may be necessary for a number of reasons. Adults may need to wear diapers when they are physically or mentally disabled or in the final stages of a debilitating disease. The elderly may require diapers in the final stages of life. Caregiving instructions must include sanitary measures and protecting the dignity of the adult in diapers during the changing.

2. Preparation is Key

Adult diaper changing goes much more smoothly when you prepare. Collect your necessary items first. Start with a clean diaper and plenty of wipes. Place a towel or a disposable pad under the person to protect the area where you are changing. Keep baby powder and diaper rash ointment handy. Place a trash can nearby so that you can dispose of your wipes and the soiled diaper as quickly and cleanly as possible.

3. Pants and Position

Take the pants off all the way, not just to the ankles. This makes adult diaper changing easier and more comfortable for the person you are cleaning. Use your forearm to help pull the person's knees up. Put your forearm behind his knees and push the knees as close to his chest as possible. Depending on the size of the person, you may find it easier to clean him if you roll him over on his side.

4. Technique

When you undo the tape on the diaper, don't pull the diaper away. Leave it there in case any accidents occur while you're changing. Use the wipes and wipe from front to back, especially on females. Put your used wipes in the soiled diaper as you work. When you change a diaper containing a bowel movement, continue using wipes until one comes out unsoiled so that you're sure the anus area is thoroughly cleaned. Fold the soiled diaper with the wipes inside and put it in the trash can.

5. Finishing Touches

Put your forearm under the adult's knees and lift her up. Put the clean diaper under her. Pull the diaper up until it's at her waistline in the back. Sprinkle baby powder over the entire diaper area. This absorbs odor and also keeps the skin dry to prevent rashes. If a rash is present, apply diaper rash ointment instead of powder. Pull the diaper up between her legs. Fasten the diaper tapes snugly and make sure the diaper fits comfortably before redressing her.
