Otitis media, or an ear infection as it's commonly called, is one of the most common ailments in childhood. Homeopathic remedies can be extremely beneficial, especially since most ear infections are viral and are therefore not susceptible to the effects of antibiotics. When choosing a homeopathic remedy, pay close attention to the detailed symptoms you're experiencing. Things to consider when deciding which remedy is right for you are the type of pain (shooting, sharp, dull), whether the pain radiates to another location, what makes it better and what makes it worse. Then use these specific symptoms to choose the appropriate remedy for you. Homeopathic remedies come in the form of tiny pellets that are placed under the tongue where they dissolve and begin to take effect by gently, energetically moving you back towards a state of health. Once a remedy has been chosen begin with 30C potency, 3 pellets under the tongue every 3 to 4 hours while symptoms persist.

Belladonna

When there is a sudden onset of pain and a high fever with no thirst, consider belladonna. Typically, this remedy works best if the pain is deep and throbs in synchronicity with your heartbeat. Often children needing this remedy will cry out in their sleep with pain.

Aconitum Napellus

Similar to the previous remedy, a sudden onset of severe pain with a high fever can indicate aconitum. However, a great thirst accompanies these symptoms unlike Belladonna. Additional signs to confirm this remedy are an ear infection occurring after exposure to cold, dry winds and sharp pains with bright red external ears.

Chamomilla

Chamomilla is a homeopathic remedy useful when children are irritable due to the violent pain in their ears. They tend to be capricious, wanting to be held, then wanting to be put down, then wanting to be held again. When the pain is stitching, made better by warm applications and when one cheek is red and the other is pale, choose Chamomilla.

Lycopodium

This remedy is indicated if there is a thick, yellow, offensive discharge from the ear and a humming or roaring sound that makes it difficult to hear. Additionally, people needing this remedy have an aversion to being alone, are irritable and tend to feel better between 4 to 8 pm.

Sulphur

Sulphur is best prescribed when you have a hot head and cold feet, are thirsty and have localized throbbing and redness in your ears.
