Massage during pregnancy can be a great way to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Whether the massage is done by a professional or a loved one, there are some contraindications for pregnancy massage. There are pressure points on the body that can cause adverse reactions that can be harmful to the pregnancy. Massaging very lightly or avoiding certain areas can reduce the risk of harming the pregnancy.
Pregnancy Complications
According to HealthyChild.com, women who have certain pregnancy complications should avoid receiving a massage. This includes women who have a threatened miscarriage, are experiencing early labor or have been diagnosed with eclampsia, pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes. Any existing placental dysfunctions, such as a small placenta or poor placement, are reason to avoid massage. The pressure or stimulation caused by the massage can lead to an exacerbation of the conditions, including a loss of pregnancy or pre-term labor.
Health Conditions
Women with certain health conditions, whether they developed before or during pregnancy, should avoid massage without the specific approval of her health care provider. These health conditions include high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney and bladder diseases, cancer, undiagnosed lumps and/or any infectious disease. Englewood Massage Therapy suggests that some health conditions that are under control due to medications and/or exercise may allow an exception for massage.
Specific Areas
Massaging certain pressure points, such as those near the ankle or in the hands, can induce labor, says TheBodyWorker.com. A professional masseuse should know the points to avoid. Other areas to avoid include severe varicose veins, blood clots and sites of skin irritation and/or discharge. Any abdominal massage should be avoided throughout pregnancy.
High-risk Pregnancy
There are many classifications of a high-risk pregnancy. Any woman who has been given this definition should avoid a pregnancy massage. Some spas and clinics require written permission for massage to provide services. Examples of high-risk pregnancy indicators include chronic hypertension, intrauterine growth retardation, abnormal fetal movements, risk of fetal genetic disorders, asthma, multiple pregnancies, previous pregnancy complications and/or if the mother is younger than 18 or older than age 35. Women on bed rest should also not receive a massage.
