A 10-panel drug screen is a diagnostic tool consisting of measures to test for evidence of illegal drugs and high concentrations of prescription drugs in urine. This one-step test screens for 10 commonly abused drugs. Craig Medical Distribution attests that 95 percent of misused drugs can be detected using the 10-panel drug screen. These tests are often used by employers, law enforcement agencies and schools to periodically test individuals within their institution. The 10 drugs screened for are cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, tetrahydrocannabinol (marijuana), methadone, opiates, phencyclidine, barbiturates, benzodiazepines and tricyclic antidepressants.
Psychomotor Stimulants
Cocaine, amphetamines and methamphetamines are considered psychomotor stimulants. According to Addiction Science Network, these drugs stimulate psychological and sensory-motor functioning. When used therapeutically, this class of drugs is used to treat disorders such as attention deficit hyperactive disorder and narcolepsy. These drugs are also used for weight loss.
Psychogenics
Tetrahydrocannabinol, or marijuana, is considered a cannabinoid (from the cannabis sativa plant). According to Addiction Science Network, this drug alters a user's state of awareness while creating pleasant serene feelings. Addiction Science Network recognizes that this drug has not been approved for medicinal purposes although it has been used to relieve symptoms of nausea and anxiety and to increase appetite in extremely ill patients.
Narcotics
Methadone is a synthetic opiate that has analgesic effects. The Methadone Treatment website states it is an effective way to help heroin addicts stop their habit. Methadone is easily abused and its use should be monitored by a trained health care professional. Opiates are considered narcotics and must be prescribed by a qualified health care provider. While they relieve pain, coughing, diarrhea and drug withdrawal symptoms, they are addictive.
Hallucinogens
Phencyclidine is a stimulatory hallucinogen. Addiction Science Network states this type of drug produces both psychomotor stimulation and hallucinations. According to Addiction Science Network, there are no human approved therapeutic uses for this drug. Phencyclidine is used as an anesthetic in animals.
Depressants
Barbiturates used in excess cause depression of coordination in all bodily activities. According to Addiction Science Network, in prescribed amounts, barbiturates can be used as pain relievers, anticonvulsants, sedatives and hypnotics. Benzodiazepines, according to the Center for Substance Abuse Research, are one of the most common depressant drugs prescribed today. The center states the sedative effect of benzodiazepines is responsible for its potential for abuse.
Antidepressants
Tricyclic antidepressants, according to the Mayo Clinic, are not considered addictive. Side effects of taking this type of medication include drowsiness, increased heart rate, disorientation and confusion.
