Salvia divinorum is an herb from the sage genus that has more than 900 species and, like mint, is part of the Labiatae plant family. In the ancient Mexican Mazatec's religious and healing rituals, the salvia divinorum plant was used as a meditative enhancement and has also been referred to as the "sage of the diviners." Salvia divinorum contains salvinorin A, which sets it apart from the rest of the sage genus plants. Salvinorin A is a psychoactive chemical whose mechanism of action involves opioid receptor proteins in the brain. When salvinorin A binds with these receptors in the human nervous system, it induces a mind altering state.
Relaxation State
A state of relaxation will overcome the body. Your senses will be sharpened. Happiness and laughter are common and you will feel at peace. This is also know as the meditative state of Salvia Divinorum.
Altered Perception State
A person will be able to appreciate sound. Colors, shapes, and patterns will be enhanced. Perception of depth is altered. For example objects will seem bigger, brighter, and closer or farther away then they really are. Memory can be affected and hallucinations are common.
Visionary State
In the visionary state, you will close your eyes and see two- and three-dimensional images. You can hear sounds that are not really there and may encounter other beings. People in the visionary state will feel as if they are in other places, flying, or floating similar to a dream.
