How to Use Maca Root

Grown in the highlands of western South America, maca is a root crop and herbal remedy that possesses medicinal properties for which it is prized. It is commonly used in traditional medicine as a performance enhancer and aphrodisiac, to improve sexual function and fertility and to increase a general sense of well-being. Maca contains antioxidants and may also help in treating menopause and prostate issues. For these reasons, Maca is sometimes called Peruvian ginseng. While it is little known in the United States, its popularity is growing, and maca, in a variety of forms, is now relatively available.

Step 1

Purchase dried maca root in powdered or capsule form. Ensure that you buy your maca root from a reliable source with a solid reputation, to guarantee a quality product.

Step 2

Take at least six 500-milligram capsules of powdered maca root per day, according to the Sexual Health Center at Discovery Health. Alternately, you can place a tablespoon of the dried root powder into a blender drink and drink it one daily.

Step 3

Increase the dosage as necessary to achieve the desired effects. The Sexual Health Center at Discovery Health also indicates that maca root is used as a food as well as a supplement and has low toxicity levels. It can be taken in generous quantities, and the more Maca taken the greater the effects.
