The avian flu virus, or "bird flu" as it is also referred to, has gained notoriety in recent years as a result of fears it could lead to a global pandemic, according to experts in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The viral strains associated with avian flu are usually contracted from direct contact with infected birds, such as chickens. If you experience any flu virus-related symptoms, seek professional medical care.
Elevated Fever
Bird flu symptoms are quite similar to other flu-like viruses. An elevated fever is a sign that your body's immune system is attempting to stave off an infection. If your body temperature approaches 102 or 103 degrees Fahrenheit, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Coughing and/or Sore Throat
Coughing is the body's way of attempting to clear foreign materials from your breathing passages, including bacteria/microbes. A serious or persistent cough is more than likely an indication of an existing sickness and can be a mode of bacterial transfer from the host to another individual. Sore throats may also be a symptom of a possible viral infection.
Muscle Aches
As is common with many influenza strains, muscular aches and pains may be experienced by individuals suffering from a bird flu viral infection.
Diarrhea
Though it is not always a common sign of avian flu virus infection, watery diarrhea may be a symptom indicative of infection in some individuals.
Eye Infections
Some strains of avian flu virus have the ability to cause eye infections, specifically conjunctivitis, which is a serious inflammation of the outermost layer of the eye and the innermost surface of the eyelids.
Respiratory Disease
A more serious symptom resulting from avian flu infection is the potential development of severe respiratory distress, which negatively impacts the body's lungs. Acute afflictions of this nature can be life-threatening, as your blood may be unable to get the adequate concentration of oxygen to supply your body. Seek medical treatment immediately if you experience any serious respiratory issues.
Viral Pneumonia
Viral pneumonia is an infection of the lungs caused by viruses, such as the avian flu virus. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms may start out with those generally associated with a common cold or standard flu, such as coughing and a high fever. More serious symptoms include breathing difficulties, shortness of breath and chest pains related to breathing or coughing.
