Few non-fatal illnesses disrupt one's life more than gastroenteritis, or the stomach flu. Vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and cramping are all symptoms of this annoying and contagious disease. Medications, including antibiotics, are ineffective against the virus. America's leading health care agencies--the Mayo Clinic and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention--recommend letting the disease run its course and treating the patient, not the symptoms.

Fluid Intake

One of the most serious complications related to stomach virus is dehydration. The virus reduces the body's desire to consume food or liquid, while eliminating the remaining liquid in the digestive system as waste. Although fluid consumption may be difficult or undesirable, it is essential to returning to health. Water is best. However, doctors may suggest an electrolyte sports drink, which replaces both fluid and sodium. Sipping the fluids is recommended, as rapid gulping or drinking may lead to more vomiting. People with a stomach virus should try to drink 10 to 12 glasses of water a day.

Rest

Nausea and diarrhea can take a toll on the body. Combined with reduced fluids and eating, the body does not have the proper nutrients for high-energy exertion. Sleep and rest are typically ordered so that the person with the virus can rebuild his energy.

Avoid Certain Foods and Medications

Ibuprofen and acetaminophen can irritate the stomach further, prolonging and intensifying the virus's effects. Anti-diarrheal drugs may work properly, but closing an exit traps the virus, potentially prolonging the illness or increasing the incidence of vomiting.

Gradually Reintroduce Food

If the person with the stomach virus feels hungry, he should attempt to eat something bland and unseasoned. Saltine crackers, toasted bread and gelatin are recommended by the Mayo Clinic, as is rice, bananas and chicken. If the person has no appetite, he should try drinking a nutritional supplement beverage. This will at least replenish the body's vitamin and mineral levels.
