The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue that connects the heel to the toes. Inflammation of the plantar fascia (plantar fasciitis) is one of the most common orthopedic complaints relating to the foot, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you are concerned that you may have plantar fasciitis, contact your family physician or a podiatrist for advice.

Why It Happens

The plantar fascia is similar to the bow string of a hunting bow, according to William R. Olsen, DPM. Picture the arch of the foot as the hunting bow. Pressure on the bow (or arch) causes the connective tissue to tighten and stretch the bow string (plantar fascia). Common causes of pressure on the arch are repetitive athletic activities, excess body weight, weak foot muscles, tight calf muscles or wearing ill-fitting shoes. Symptoms occur when the connective tissue becomes inflamed, causing tiny tears.

Where It Happens

Patients experience a stabbing pain in one or both feet. Pain may be felt in the heel, where the connective tissue attaches to the heel bone, or in the arches of the foot, according to the Mayo Clinic.

When It Happens

Patients often experience pain in the sole of one or both feet when they get out of bed in the morning or when they stand after sitting for long periods. William R. Olsen, DPM, explains that the connective tissue tightens while at rest, so putting weight on the affected area causes a traumatic stretching, resulting in pain. Walking helps to loosen the tissue, but pain may return later in the day as well.

Onset and Duration

The onset is usually gradual and can be temporary if treated. If the pain is ignored, the inflammation will continue and can become chronic and heel spurs (calcium deposits) may develop under the heel bone as well, according to William R. Olsen, DPM.
