Restless leg syndrome is a condition characterized by the irresistible need to move the legs continually. The feeling, often described as a creeping, tugging or burning sensation, usually occurs at night when the body is at rest. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke report that 12 million American suffer from RLS and those numbers may be higher due to a large number of misdiagnoses. Although there is no cure, there are several different medications available that can help to relieve the symptoms. Many of the medications are generic, meaning they do not have patent protection, which is advantageous to patients since generic medications generally cost less.

Robinirole Hydrochloride

Ropinirole hydrochloride is a generic version of a commonly prescribed medication that acts as a dopamine agonist. Dopamine is a chemical in the brain that helps to carry signals sent from the brain to the muscles thereby helping to control body movements. When dopamine levels decrease, the signals are interrupted causing muscles to become rigid and tense.
Robinirole hydrochloride works to increase levels of dopamine. By increasing the dopamine levels, normal signals are restored, helping to relieve the symptoms of RLS.

Pramipexole

Pramipexole is another generic medication in the category of dopamine agonists. Pramipexole is also commonly prescribed to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Carbamazepine

Carbamazepine is generic formulation of a mood-stabilizing medication that is often used to treat epilepsy, which is why it is categorized as an anticonvulsant. Carbamazepine reduces the abnormal electrical activity in the brain. According to the National Institutes of Health, it is therefore often effective in treating the symptoms of RLS.

Primidone

Primidone is another generic drug classified as an anticonvulsant. Primidone is used to treat essential tremor, a condition that causes rhythmic trembling of the hands, head and voice. Because primidone can help to control electrical impulses in the brain it can be effective in treating RLS.

Clonazepam

Sedatives, such as the generic medication clonazepam, work to relax muscles. Because the symptoms of RLS can interfere with sleep, sedatives not only relieve the symptoms but also help promote restful sleep.

Oxydocone

Oxycodone is an opioid medication (meaning it is derived from a chemical from the opium plant) classified as a narcotic pain reliever. The doctors at the Mayo Clinic indicate that pain relievers such as generic oxycodone can help to relieve mild to severe symptoms of RLS but caution high doses can induce addiction.
