The mesothelium is the thin layer of tissue that covers the majority of your internal organs. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that strikes this lining. Because the cancer can be found in different areas--such as the lungs, heart, abdomen or testicles--the clinical signs will be different. Pleural mesothelioma refers to mesothelioma of the tissue lining the lungs and is the most common form of mesothelioma. Asbestos exposure is the greatest risk factor for mesothelioma cancers.
Shortness of Breath
A person with pleural mesothelioma may find themselves short of breath. Shortness of breath is a vague symptom that can be attributed to many other diseases and conditions; experiencing shortness of breath during exertion or at rest should be reported to a health care provider.
Cough
Pleural mesothelioma patients may also present clinically with a persistent dry or raspy cough that is typically non-productive. They may also experience the coughing up blood (hemoptysis).
Pleurisy
In addition to the cough and shortness of breath, a patient with pleural mesothelioma may have pain while breathing or a persistent pain in the chest or rib area. Similar to shortness of breath, pleurisy can be an indicator of many different conditions and diseases, and should be discussed with a health care provider.
Skin Lumps
Pleural mesothelioma shares a symptom with peritoneal mesothelioma--unusual lumps under the skin. In the case of peritoneal mesothelioma, they appear beneath the chest. A health care provider should be consulted if this symptom is experienced.
Fatigue and Weight Loss
An individual with mesothelioma may experience significant fatigue and unusual weight loss (weight loss that was not intended). Because the symptoms of mesothelioma are vague and are similar to many common illnesses, mesothelioma cancer patients are often shocked by a cancer diagnosis. It is important to see a health care provider regularly and provide information regarding any asbestos exposure.
