Round Table is the name of a restaurant/pizzeria chain. Round Table has a large pizza menu and offers pies with a wide variety of toppings (from plain cheese to Hawaiian) as well as crust styles (original to pan) on their menu. Pizza can be a healthy meal choice in moderation, but is often high in calories, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium, particularly if less healthful toppings, such as sausage, are selected.
Best on the Menu
The Gourmet Veggie and Guinevere's Garden Delight (skinny or thin crust) are the best picks of the Round Table pizzas. Of those, Guinevere's Garden Delight is the lowest in calories and fat. One slice of a large pie offers 180 calories, 8 g protein, 8 g fat (4 g saturated), 19 g carbohydrates (2 g sugar, 1 g dietary fiber), 25 mg cholesterol and 420 mg sodium. It is calcium rich, meeting 15 percent of the Recommended Daily Value (DV) in one slice. The Gourmet Veggie is slightly higher in calories, fat and sodium, but offers more nutrients. One slice of a large pie provides 200 calories, 9 g protein, 10 g fat (4.5 g saturated), 20 g carbohydrates (2 g each sugar and dietary fiber), 25 mg cholesterol and 540 mg sodium. One slice meets 20, 15 and 10 percent of the DV for calcium and vitamins A and C, respectively.
Worst on the Menu
The Ulti-Meat and Smokehouse Combo: Pepperoni (pan crust, a thicker crust) are the worst nutrition picks on Round Table's pizza menu. One slice of a large Ulti-Meat pie offers 390 calories, 17 g protein, 18 g fat (8 g saturated), 38 g carbohydrates (2 g each sugar and dietary fiber), 45 mg cholesterol and 950 mg of sodium. Similarly, one slice of a large Smokehouse Combo pie offers 370 calories, 16 g protein, 16 g fat (7 g saturated), 40 g carbohydrates (3 g sugar and 2 g dietary fiber), 45 mg cholesterol and 900 mg sodium. Both are calcium and iron rich, meeting 20 and 15 percent of the DV for each mineral, respectively. Iron is necessary for red blood cell formation and for providing your body's cells with oxygen.
Pros and Cons
These pizzas are a good food source of certain vitamins and minerals as well as muscle-building protein and energizing carbohydrates. Calcium is important for building strong bones and teeth, and vitamins A and C are antioxidant nutrients, essential for immune system function, healthy eyesight, growth and development, and collagen production. The pizzas are low in sugar and moderate in sodium. By eating more than one slice, though, you could easily surpass the recommended limit for sodium (2,300 mg daily or 1 tsp.). If you limit yourself to one or two slices of the healthier picks, on occasion, and pair it with a salad, it's not a bad choice. The worst picks, however, are very high in calories, total fat, saturated fat and sodium. One slice of either meets over 1/3 of your daily limit for saturated fat and roughly 40 percent of the recommended limit for sodium. Saturated fat is associated with an increase in blood cholesterol levels and a greater risk for heart disease. Too much sodium may exacerbate high blood pressure, or hypertension.
