Millions of Americans suffer with some form of headache on a daily basis. Many take prescriptions, some turn to over-the-counter medications and others try to tough it out just to make it to the end of the day. Fortunately, there are natural ways to find relief without expensive trips to the doctor that result in even more expensive trips to the pharmacy.

Herbal Remedies

Feverfew is one of the most commonly recommended herbs for migraines. It is often suggested to take this herb with magnesium and gingko biloba daily to prevent these painful attacks. Niacin is also helpful for migraines. According to the "Complete Encyclopedia of Natural Healing" by Dr. Gary Null, niacin tends to create a flushing sensation that eliminates excess blood and results in the prevention of migraines. When headaches are the result of air travel with nervousness and insomnia, Valerian can be helpful. White willow bark is known among naturopaths as nature's aspirin. Because it is a natural pain reliever, it can be of assistance in relieving headaches of many kinds.

Homeopathic Remedies

Belladonna may relieve sudden, throbbing headaches that are exacerbated by motion. For headaches that cause irritability, nausea and become worse with movement, bryonia may be indicated. This is especially the case if the pain is steady and sharp local to the forehead, with possible radiating pain toward the back of the head. Arsenicum album may provide relief for sinus headaches with burning or throbbing pain that lets up when lying in a cool room.

Adequate Hydration

Dehydration is the cause of many headaches. If your headache is accompanied by dark urine, dry lips or mouth, or even dry skin, you may be experiencing a dehydration headache. Replace caffeinated drinks with water, because they may cause further dehydration and worsening of pain. Drinking adequate amounts of water daily is the best preventative measure you can take. While most people have heard you should drink eight 8-oz. glasses daily, this may not be enough. Divide your weight by 2, then consume that many ounces daily for sufficient hydration. If you exercise regularly, you should drink more water to make up for fluids lost through perspiration.

Aromatherapy

Headaches can often be treated with aromatherapy alone or in conjunction with other remedies. When dealing with migraines, lavender oil may be particularly effective, as it helps to relax the neck muscles and release tension. Massage the oil into the neck and temples. Peppermint oil is also effective in relieving headaches. It may be taken internally if a few drops are added to drinking water. It can also be used as a massage oil, or inhaled from the palm.
