What Are Some Possible Side Effects of Lipitor?

Lipitor is a prescription medication used for the treatment of high levels of cholesterol. It is also used for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Lipitor prevents the formation of cholesterol by inhibiting the HMG-CoA enzyme. The body uses cholesterol from food instead. Many side effects may occur with the use of Lipitor, including headache, insomnia, constipation, urinary tracts infections, respiratory side effects and muscle pain.

Headache

The most common side effect in individuals taking Lipitor is headache. According to the Drug Information Handbook, up to 17 percent may experience headache. You may take a pain reliever such as Tylenol for the headache; ask a pharmacist or physician which pain reliever is best for you. If the headache is persistent or gets worse, inform your health care provider.

Insomnia

Lipitor may also cause insomnia or difficulty falling asleep. Insomnia can be a troublesome side effect which can lead to fatigue and dizziness. Speak with you health care provider about your insomnia so that he may adjust your drug therapy adequately.

Constipation

Constipation may occur in about 3 percent of individuals on Lipitor. Drinking plenty of fluids and consuming an adequate amount of fiber may help with constipation. Exercising on a regular basis may also help. Constipation is associated with flatulence, abdominal pain and stomach pain.

Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are also common with the administration of Lipitor. It may occur in up to 10 percent of individuals, according to the Drug Information Handbook. A urinary tract infection requires antibiotic therapy. See your physician if you experience painful urination, itchiness and discharge with odor.

Respiratory Effects

Effects on the respiratory system may occur more often while on Lipitor. Up to 6 percent of individuals may get sinusitis, which is an inflammation of the sinuses, which are located behind the cheeks. Pharyngitis, an inflammation of the throat, may be seen in up to 3 percent of people. Bronchitis, inflammation of the airways of the lungs, and rhinitis, inflammation of the area in the nose resulting in runny nose, may occur with this drug as well.

Muscle Pain

Lipitor may cause muscle pain, which is characterized as pain, weakness and numbness in the muscles and body. This adverse effect is called rhabdomyolysis and occurs in less then 2 percent of people. It occurs rarely but is a life-threatening effect that requires emergency medical attention.
