There are a number of herbs that can improve lung health, either by getting rid of infections and clearing up congestion, or by ensuring that the lungs stay strong and clean so no problems develop in the first place. Very few scientific studies have been conducted on the efficacy of herbs to treat respiratory disorders, but anecdotal evidence and natural medicine both confirm that some herbs may have some benefit.
Step 1
Buy a few supplements that support overall lung health. Good choices are fenugreek, which cleans out bronchial passages and mullein, which cleans your lungs and allows for deeper breathing. These two herbs can be taken on a daily basis, even if you don't have any health issues at the time. Both supplements are available in a variety of strengths, so make sure you read the labels to know how much to take.
Step 2
Add garlic to your meals or take as a supplement. Garlic can also be added to teas (along with honey and lemon juice) to help clear respiratory passages and fight lung infections. It's also useful to treat bronchial infections and to help you cough up mucous.
Step 3
Make your own infusion by boiling a cup of water and then adding a couple of tablespoons of angelica root. Let sit for 15 to 20 minutes before drinking. Angelica strengthens weakened lungs and it can be used to treat lung infections or to prevent respiratory issues, especially if your immune system is compromised or you're already sick.
Step 4
Try soothing herbs like wild cherry bark, licorice root or slippery elm bark if your lungs are dry and you're experiencing a dry cough or chest pain. These three herbs are available as tablets or capsules, but can also be found in the form of essential oils, which can be added to a cup of tea or water. Licorice root is also available as a tea.
