Natural Ways to Relieve Menstrual Cramps

Menstrual periods are common during a woman's menstrual period, though not all women have them. They can range from mild to severe enough to keep you in bed, and they usually occur just before and during the menstrual period. Menstrual cramping occurs when the uterus contracts to send out the tissue and fluids not needed. For most women, cramps don't have a specific underlying cause and are easily relieved. Some cramps are caused by underlying disorders in the reproductive system and need specific treatment

Exercise

The last thing many women want to do while dealing with menstrual cramps is exercise. However, exercising during your period causes the body to release endorphins. Those are our bodies' feel-good hormones and natural pain reliever. Any exercise that gets the heart rate up is a good choice, and walking is an easy form of exercise that also gets the blood flowing through your pelvis. This helps rid you of the bloated feeling while still easing the cramps. Yoga and other relaxing types of exercises can give pain relief by decreasing your stress level.

Diet

Following a healthy diet is a good way to relieve and reduce further cramps with your menstrual cycle. Generally during a menstrual period, women have urges to eat sugary or salty foods. This adds to your discomfort and makes you tired. Salt causes water retention and leads to bloating. Avoid caffeine and alcohol; those can aggravate your cramps. The University of Chicago's Women's Guide suggests eating foods high in iron and an adequate amount of fruits and vegetables. This gives you the energy to do those helpful exercises.

Heat

Using a heating pad on the lower abdomen can decrease the discomfort many women feel. The heat increases blood flow in the area and relaxes your muscles. To avoid injury, don't use a heating pad directly on the skin unless the directions specify. Don't leave the heating pad on for an extended period. According to Mayoclinic.com, soaking in a hot bath can provide similar pain relief.

Sex

Sexual intercourse with an orgasm or even an orgasm had alone can decrease cramps when the uterus contracts, according to Stanford.edu. This method generally gives short-term relief.
