The Master Cleanse, also known as the lemonade diet or the lemon cleanse, is a detoxification program created by Stanley Burroughs. In 1976, Burroughs published "The Master Cleanser," a book detailing how to detox using lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup. Burroughs was not a doctor and was charged with practicing medicine without a license and involuntary manslaughter when a patient died under his care, according to Jocelyn Voo in an article in "Fitness" magazine. If you decide to try the Master Cleanse, do so under a doctor's care.
Step 1
Ease into the detox with a three-day plan. Eat only fresh fruits and vegetables on the first day, drink only fresh vegetable and fruit juices the second day, and drink only orange juice on the third day.
Step 2
Create the lemonade for your detox diet. Mix 2 tbsp. of fresh-squeezed lemon juice, 2 tbsp. of maple syrup, 1/10 tsp. of cayenne pepper and 8 oz. of spring or filtered water.
Step 3
Drink the lemonade mixture to curb hunger and detox the body. Consume only water and as much of the lemonade mixture as you want throughout the day.
Step 4
Continue to drink only water and the lemonade mixture for as long as you feel comfortable continuing the detox. Some people follow the detox diet for four to five days, while others continue for two weeks, according to the Every Diet website.
Step 5
Ease back out of the diet. Drink only orange juice on the first day, drink only fresh fruit and vegetable juices on the second day, and eat only fresh fruits and vegetables on the third day.
Tips and Warnings
- Following the Master Cleanse regimen might cause rapid weight loss.
- Consult a doctor if you begin to feel dizzy or notice any other symptoms while following the Master Cleanse.
