Acne is a common skin condition that affects most people at some point in their lives. Even after active acne disappears, it can leave scars, which can be unsightly reminders of the acne. The definition of scarring according to Derma Network is “a process where collagen within the skin is damaged from inflammation...” This process of scarring can vary, ranging from shallow, superficial scars to deeper scars. For those plagued by acne scarring, there are effective procedures for removing them.
Chemical Peels
Acne scars can be removed using chemicals. Chemical peels come in varying concentrations and the type and strength are chosen based on the severity of acne scarring. They work by “[producing a] controlled injury to the skin that promotes the growth of new skin with an improved appearance,” according to Derma Network. Chemical peels actually “peel” off the skin, revealing newer skin. There are mild chemical peels such as alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and glycolic peels. The results from these peels last about one to three months and carry low risks. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels are considered medium depth and reach deeper than the milder peels. The effects last approximately three to six months and should only be applied by an experienced professional. Phenol peels are the strongest of the chemical peels. This peel is different in that it actually affects the epidermis, whereas the other peels do not. This peel carries the most risks and should only be applied by a certified physician. The results from this peel can last for years.
Laser Resurfacing
Laser resurfacing, another acne scar removal procedure, emits a high beam of light energy that removes a layer of skin. There are two types of lasers used for laser resurfacing: carbon dioxide and erbium. The carbon dioxide laser uses short light pulses, or a continuous light beam to remove a thin layer of skin, while erbium laser resurfacing vaporizes the top skin layer. Laser resurfacing is good for mild to moderate acne scarring. According to Healthyu-skin.org, “acne laser treatment can result in smoother, clearer skin when done by a qualified doctor.” This form of treatment may take several sessions to obtain the desired results. Make sure to choose a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon that is experienced in performing laser resurfacing to get optimal results. The heal time for this procedure is approximately three to seven days, and the results last for ten years to a lifetime, according to Johns Hopkins Cosmetic Center.
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion “is considered one of the best acne scar treatments", as stated on Dermabrasion.info. This technique to remove acne scars uses a spinning wire brush or diamond instrument to remove or “sand” both layers of skin, the epidermis and dermis, to reveal smoother skin. Because this is a more invasive procedure than some other acne scar removal methods, this procedure should be performed in an operating room, whether in a dermatologist’s office or outpatient surgery facility. This procedure carries a higher risk of infection than some other procedures and has a recovery time of several weeks up to three months. The results can last for several years.
