The same plant used to flavor breath mints, candy canes and gum, in other forms has powerful medicinal properties. Essential peppermint oil helps cure several common physical and emotional ailments. In "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils," Julie Lawless writes that peppermint oil reduces fatigue, relieves headaches and also helps with nausea and vomiting. The best application method depends on the condition. For nausea and vomiting, the most-effective peppermint oil aromatherapy treatment is massage, says Patricia Davis in her book, "Aromatherapy: An A to Z."

Step 1

Pour a few drops of diluted peppermint oil on the stomach and abdomen.

Step 2

Lightly place the hands on the abdomen.

Step 3

Massage the abdomen in a clockwise circular motion.

Tips and Warnings

  • Essential oils are not soluble in water. They must be diluted with a secondary carrier oil or in alcohol. Good carrier oils for dilution include almond oil or jojoba oil. To dilute to 1 percent solution, add one drop peppermint oil and approximately 5ml of the carrier oil.
  • More peppermint oil is not better. Increasing peppermint oil concentration above 1 percent can cause skin irritation.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 percent diluted peppermint oil
  • Almond oil or jojoba oil
