Leki fitness poles have been sold in the United States since 2003. Leki fitness poles increase calories burned during walking by up to 40 percent, according to the Leki website. The poles increase the intensity level of the workout, involve more muscle groups, and reduce the amount of stress on knees and other joints during physical activity. Individuals of all ages, sizes and genders use fitness poles to get more out of their workout and to provide the needed knee and joint support.

Adjustable and Fixed Poles

Fitness poles come in both adjustable and fixed lengths. Beginners should always start with a pair of adjustable poles while they learn proper technique and figure out what size is most comfortable. Adjustable poles are used not only by beginners, but by individuals who will be on different terrain with varied levels of intensity. A fixed pole is used for individuals who stick to the same workout terrain and techniques.

Pole Length

When using fitness poles take the time to ensure that the pole length is correct. A correct pole length helps prevent overuse injuries. According to Leki, pole length is found by putting your hands in the straps. The rubber tip of the poles should be adjacent to your heels. Straighten your elbows while dropping your hands forward. Stand with good posture. If your wrists are lower than the elbows, are you have found the proper fit.

Improve Coordination

Using fitness poles involves coordination. Practicing the opposing arm and leg swing with your Leki poles will strengthen your coordination. The opposing arm and leg swing is exactly what it sounds like. When the right leg comes forward, the left arm comes forward, and when the left leg comes forward, the right comes forward. The farther out in front the lead arm is, the more the tip of the pole will propel you forward.

Relaxed Hands

Relax the hands while using your fitness poles. Be sure that the grip on the pole is light and relaxed and that the hands are comfortable.

Movement

Movement of the Leki fitness poles comes from the shoulders and not the elbows. Maximum fitness benefits are achieved using a long, relaxed arm technique. When too much bend in the elbows is found, lengthen the poles and extend the arms out farther.

Pole Tips

The Leki fitness pole has a Universal Carbide Flextip. The carbide flextip is designed so that it can bend up to 30 degrees before bending or damaging the shaft of the pole. By using carbide as the material in the tip, the grip potential of the pole is increased on icy and rocky surfaces. The tip is angled to increase the upper body workout by pushing off during the stride.
