For long-term weight loss and/or control of chronic diseases such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease, choosing the right method of meal planning can be somewhat confusing. NutriSystem is a program with much media attention. It is a portion-control program in which participants buy prepackaged, ready-to-heat foods for all meals and snacks; however, according to a report by ConsumerAffairs.com, taste, appearance and price are the primary complaints. The cost of the food does not include the extra expense of having to buy fruits, vegetables and dairy to balance the meal. It is also important to enjoy what you eat. There are individual differences in food preferences, family dynamics and income. The goal is to keep the weight off or to control the disease, while continuing to enjoy your favorite foods. Careful consideration must be given when searching for something you can live with vs. something you have to put up with.

Registered Dietitian

A Registered Dietitian (RD) is the expert when it comes to food and nutrition. An RD can help you to create an individualized meal plan that includes your favorite foods. They can actually provide protection from the food police. Instead of telling you what you can't eat, they will tell you, "Yes, you can." An RD can also provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for a variety of chronic diseases and conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. RDs are approved Medicare Part B providers for those diagnosed with diabetes or chronic kidney disease. Many third-party payers also reimburse for MNT provided by an RD. Even if you have to pay out-of-pocket, an RD is often cheaper than the programs that require you to buy their prepackaged foods.

Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers also has a real-food approach to weight loss and long-term weight management. The program is based on sensible eating via several methods. Regardless of the method, you can still enjoy your favorite foods. The original program was based on weekly group classes; however, with the Internet, you can join the online program. Costs vary from program to program. Several payment options are available; however, you can always attend a meeting for free to see if there is a plan for you. Online plans vary, but they average a $30 initial sign-up fee, followed by $18 per month thereafter.

MyPyramid.gov

MyPyramid.gov is the revamped Food Guide Pyramid based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. It allows users to assess their current eating habits and then create an individualized plan to suit their particular lifestyle and preferences. It is a highly interactive site for persons of all ages and stages of life. There are games, tools, resources and continuing education activities for health-care professionals. Best of all, it's free.
