How to Reduce Open Pores on the Face

Open pores on the face often become more noticeable and enlarged if they are not cleansed properly. Individuals who have oily skin usually have open pores because the pores are filled with oil and a collection of impurities that include dead skin cells and cosmetics. The best way to reduce open pores is to deeply cleanse them every two weeks. Although open pores cannot be completely closed, they can be made to appear much less noticeable.

Step 1

Cleanse your face. Wet your face with warm water and then cleanse it with a facial cleanser. Put a small dollop of cleanser in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together and then apply the cleanser to your skin, gently spreading it over your entire face. Immediately rinse the cleanser off and blot the skin dry with a clean face towel.

Step 2

Apply an exfoliant formulated for facial skin onto your face. An exfoliant will remove dead skin. Do not get any on the delicate skin that surrounds the eyes. Follow the directions that come with the product you are using, and leave the exfoliant on accordingly. Remove the exfoliant, and wipe the skin with a cotton pad moistened with toner.

Step 3

Steam your face. If you are using a facial steamer, position it 16 inches away from your skin, and steam your face for about 10 minutes to open the pores even more and to soften the impurities inside them. If you do not have a facial steamer, drape your head with a towel over a basin of very warm water, holding your face about 18 inches away from the basin, and steam your face for about five minutes. Discontinue the steaming process if, or when, you feel as if your skin is burning.

Step 4

Wrap two strips of cotton around your index fingers. Apply pressure to the skin around each open pore with your index fingers until you see the impurities ooze out of the pores. Repeat this with every open pore.

Step 5

Apply a clay mask to the areas on your face that have open pores. The clay mask will draw out any impurities left behind, and it will leave the pores looking smaller. Thoroughly wash the mask off the skin when instructed to, and pat your skin dry gently with a face towel.

Step 6

Close the pores with toner. Sprinkle some toner onto a cotton pad and gently wipe the skin.
