A good facial treatment involves a series of steps. These steps allow for a smooth and effective treatment that will produce excellent results. Depending on your skin type, you may need to add or eliminate certain steps, but most are basic steps used in facial treatments. Most facial treatments should be performed one or two times a month to keep your skin looking beautiful.

Prepare for the Facial Treatment

Pin your hair up if your hair length goes past your ears. Wrap a small towel around your head and fasten it at the top of the forehead with two hair clips to keep it in place, or put a turban over your hair to keep all stray hair from getting in your way when doing the facial treatment.

Cleanse Your Face

Wet your face with warm water, and then pour a small amount of facial cleanser into the palm of your hand and gently rub your hands together to distribute the cleanser evenly. Use a facial cleanser that will address the needs of your particular skin type. Apply the facial cleanser to your skin and rub it lightly all over your face. Rinse the cleanser off your skin with warm water.

Examine Your Skin

Look closely at your skin in the mirror. Do so in a room that has more than enough adequate lighting so you can analyze your skin correctly. Notice if you have any blackheads, pimples or clogged pores.

Open Your Pores

Saturate a medium size terry cloth towel with very warm water, then wring the towel out and immediately wrap your face in it, leaving your nostrils exposed to allow for breathing. Make sure the towel is not too hot to avoid burning your skin. Remove the towel as soon as it starts to cool, and then wet the same towel again with very warm water, wring it out and wrap your face in it another time. Continue to wrap your face in warm, wet towels until 10 minutes have elapsed to open the pores and soften any debris that will be removed from the skin.

Extract Impurities

Wrap the tips of your index fingers with strips of cotton that have been moistened with toner and press down on the skin around each blackhead, pimple, or clogged pore to remove the blackhead, puss, or other matter. (Skip this step if your skin is normal and you have no blackheads, pimples, or clogged pores.)

Massage Your Skin

Massage your skin to further loosen up the debris and impurities that need to be removed, but skip this step if your skin is blemished or acne prone. Spread a quarter size amount of cold cream all over your face, avoiding the eye area. Make circular movements across your forehead with the ends of your fingertips, stopping briefly at the temples. Stroke your cheek in an upward motion with the underside of your fingers, alternating hands while doing so. Massage one cheek in this manner, and then the other, stroking each cheek a total of 18 times. Stroke your neck upwards with the underside your fingers 18 times, alternating hands. Tap all over your face lightly with the tips of your fingers.

Remove Cold Cream

Lay a tissue on your skin and press on it lightly to remove some of the cold cream, and then moisten a cotton pad with toner and wipe all traces of cold cream from your face.

Apply and Remove Mask

Spread a mask suited for your skin type over your face, avoiding the eye area, and leave the mask on for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer of the product (about 12 minutes). Wash the mask off, and use a cotton pad moistened with toner to further cleanse the mask from your skin.

Moisturize Your Skin

Spread a moisturizer for your skin type on your skin with the underside of your fingers before your skin dries completely. Moisturize your skin with an oil-free moisturizer if your skin is oily.
