With all the hormone changes that go on during pregnancy, acne is just one of many things about your body that may have changed. Oral medications are generally unsafe to use while pregnant unless your doctor prescribes them. During pregnancy, the safest methods involve using natural ingredients that are applied topically to help treat acne. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to help get rid of acne during your pregnancy that don't involve harmful chemicals.
Step 1
Wash your face. Keep your skin clean by washing your face twice daily. Use an antibacterial soap to help clean out the pores and eliminate bacteria. Wash your face right before you go to bed and don't sleep with makeup on, as this clogs the pores and can make acne worse.
Step 2
Stand in a hot, steamy shower. Allow the steam to open up your pores before you wash your face. This will help to make your face washing more effective, by providing better access to the bacteria inside. Alternatively, drape a large towel over your head and hold your face over a pot of boiling water, keeping your face about 18 inches away from the water.
Step 3
Apply benzoyl peroxide to your skin. Use a cotton ball to apply this topical agent to help clear up acne. Read and follow the manufacturers' instructions for use.
Step 4
Wash your linens. Keep your sheets and pillowcases clean, as oils from your skin can transfer onto the bedding and back onto your skin. Wash your linens at least once a week and swap out your pillowcase every couple of days.
Step 5
Drink water. Drinking water helps keep your system flushed, which helps to improve your complexion. Drink at least six to eight glasses of water daily.
Step 6
Mash up orange peels in water to create a paste. Apply the paste to your skin and leave it on for at least a half hour. Wash the paste away with warm water and gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel. Do this once a week to help improve your complexion.
Tips and Warnings
- Keep your hair pulled back and avoid touching your skin with your hands. Your fingertips and hair can transfer oils onto your face and make acne worse. Avoid popping and picking at pimples, as this can lead to scars.
- Do not take oral medications that haven't been prescribed by your doctor, as these may be harmful to your unborn child.
