Men face just as many challenges when it comes to weight loss as women, and they are just as much at risk for serious health issues caused by excess weight. Proper nutrition and exercise should form the foundation for any weight loss program--for men or women--but there are some distinctions when it comes to the best way for a man to lose weight.

Step 1

Make a plan to exercise consistently and follow through. Exercise is a large part of any good weight loss plan, and it is important that you make a plan and stick to it no matter what. A proper exercise plan should consist of at least two days a week of strength training and four to six days a week of moderate-to-intense cardiovascular exercise like running, swimming, or biking. If you are new to exercise or simply unsure of how to design and implement an exercise plan, take a class at your local gym or hire a personal trainer. Professional guidance is an investment in your health and well worth it.

Step 2

Make a commitment to a healthy diet of nutrient-rich foods. Eat plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits, lean meats, fish, and nuts. Avoid foods that are high in fat, calories, and starches. Limit your intake of alcohol and soda. Bring your lunch to work instead of eating out, as restaurant food is often full of fat, calories, and salt. Consult a nutritionist or dietitian if you need assistance planning and implementing a plan for healthy eating.

Step 3

Get your family and your boss on board with your plan to lose weight. Work schedules and family responsibilities can often interfere with your ability to stick to a weight loss plan, so it is important that you get your family and your boss on board for support. Talk to your family about your desire to be healthy and lose weight and ask for their cooperation and assistance. Depending upon your relationship with your boss, you may want to meet with him or her and explain your weight loss goals and that you will, for instance, be working out every day on your lunch break, or meeting with your personal trainer every Tuesday and Thursday at 6 p.m. Let them know that your health is important to you and that you would like their support.

Step 4

Find other men who are also trying to lose weight. Join a local group or a class at your neighborhood health club, or partner up with a male friend who is also trying to lose weight. Support is one of the most important elements in a successful weight loss plan for men.
