It's common knowledge that poorly done chemical treatments like perming, bleaching or coloring can cause frizzy, flyaway hair. For severely damaged hair, a professional deep-conditioning treatment might be your only solution, but less-damaged hair or hair that's gone frizzy because of high humidity, split ends or poor at-home styling might be remedied with regular maintenance. If your hair remains frizzy even after using these techniques regularly, see your stylist--it might simply be time for a trim.
Step 1
Apply conditioner regularly after shampooing; this helps moisturize hair which, in turn, prevents frizz. People with particularly thin hair might need to use a very light conditioner or condition only every couple of days.
Step 2
Rinse your hair with the coolest water you can tolerate. This smooths and closes the cuticle on the hair, again helping to eliminate frizz.
Step 3
Apply a smoothing product to your hair while it's still wet. Protein sprays work well, as does rose water.
Step 4
Pin your hair into manageable sections so that you can focus on drying one section at a time; doing this allows you to maintain a more even temperature throughout your head of hair, which in turn combats frizz.
Step 5
Place a diffusion nozzle on your hair dryer to help limit air flow. Use a round brush that promotes air flow; wrap each section of hair around the brush and, with the nozzle of the hair dryer close to or even in contact with the hair, gently unroll the hair from the brush as you run the dryer down it from scalp to end. Stop blow drying when your hair is about 80 percent dry; drying it all the way will promote frizz.
Step 6
Mix 1 oz. vinegar, apple cider vinegar or lemon juice in a quart of water and store in a spray bottle. Shake well, then spritz this homemade frizz-reducer on your comb or brush before styling your hair.
