Overview

Scope mouthwash is a product of Proctor and Gamble that came to the market many years ago. Scope mouthwash continues to hold its own along with other mouthwash products and most importantly to fight against the bacteria that cause halitosis or bad breath. The main active ingredient in scope mouthwash is cetylpyridinium chloride that works with the other active and inactive ingredients to reduce plaque, prevent gum disease giving users a clean, fresh taste in the mouth.

Cetylpyridinium Chloride

Cetylpyridinium chloride works as a bactericidal surfactant, according to Cure Hunter website. It is the active ingredient used in Scope and other mouthwashes and as an oral rinse for mouth sores and throat infections. It has an antiseptic effect and acts to kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria, particularly those that cause halitosis or bad breath. Cetylpyridinium helps to prevent plaque build up and to fight against diseases of the gum like gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) or periodontitis (inflammation of the soft tissues around the teeth). Both of these conditions may lead to tooth loss.

Domiphen Bromide

Domiphen bromide works as a another active ingredient in Scope mouthwash that acts as an antimicrobial, killing bacteria in the mouth and preventing halitosis and their damaging effects on the teeth and gum.

Alcohol

Denatured alcohol works as an oral astringent used in Scope mouthwash for its antimicrobial effects. It prevents the growth of germs in the bottle once it’s opened, keeps the product stable and adds a refreshing quality to its taste.

Other Ingredients

According to Scope-Mouthwash.com, the other ingredients in Scope mouth wash include the inactive products like, water, glycerin and sodium saccharin and polysorbate 80 along with buffers, flavors and colors. Glycerin acts as a humectant (retains moisture) and gives body to the formula. Sodium saccharin artificially sweetens the formula to give a sweet, pleasant taste. Polysorbate 80 is a viscous, water soluble, yellow fluid and an emulsifier. It’s used in Scope mouthwash and often used in foods like pickles. There are two buffers included in scope mouthwash, sodium benzoate and benzoic acid, they both act as preservatives. Flavors like mint and peppermint add palatability and taste. It also includes FD&C blue #1 and FD&C yellow #5.
