Dry, frizzy hair lacks the necessary moisture to have a healthy sheen. Dry hair is often frizzy and brittle and can be difficult to manage, giving you more than a few bad hair days. To prevent this, precautions must be taken, especially if you live in a cold, dry climate where Mother Nature is working against you. Preventing dry, brittle hair is as simple as making some changes to your daily life to keep bad hair days at bay.

Step 1

Wash your hair only as often as needed. For some people this may be every other day. Excessive washing can strip away the oils in your hair, leaving it dry and brittle. Use a mild shampoo that's free of alcohols. Shampoos that specialize in dry and damaged hair will be the most effective. Use warm water instead of hot to keep from drying your hair out further. Follow up with a conditioner each time you wash. Leave the conditioner on your hair for three to five minutes before rinsing.

Step 2

Squeeze your hair gently with your hands to expel excess moisture and wrap your head with a towel. Avoid vigorously rubbing the towel through your hair to dry it as this can make it frizzy.

Step 3

Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body hydrated. In keeping your body hydrated, eventually some of that moisture will begin to affect your hair as well. Drinking six to eight glasses daily will be enough to keep your body thoroughly hydrated. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate you.

Step 4

Avoid using a hair dryer as much as possible. If time is an issue, dry your hair on low heat, leaving it partially damp to finish air drying. Incorporate the use of "thermal protector" products for those times when hair must be blown dry with a hair dryer.

Step 5

Add a few drops of lukewarm water to a scoop of mayonnaise to thin it out. Apply the mayonnaise to your hair, being sure to massage it thoroughly into your scalp and coating your hair completely. Leave the mayonnaise on your hair for 10 minutes before washing it away with shampoo. Do this once a week to help keep your hair from drying out.

Tips and Warnings

  • Add more protein to your diet by consuming more chicken, nuts and fish.
  • If nothing helps to prevent or eliminate dry, brittle hair, talk to your doctor to rule out any medical conditions that may be the underlying cause.
