Choosing the best dental care products for healthy teeth and a bright, white smile doesn't need to be confusing. According to the American Dental Association, most people can achieve optimal oral care with a limited number of dental care products; the key is making wise purchases. The ADA gives its Seal of Acceptance to a select number of consumer dental care products. The ADA seal assures consumers that these products are effective and safe to use.
Toothbrush
Your best tool for good dental health is your toothbrush. The ADA advises brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits your mouth comfortably and allows access to all parts of your mouth. Replace your toothbrush with a new one whenever the bristles become frayed (about every two to three months). If you have difficulty using a toothbrush because of arthritis or another medical condition, the Mayo Clinic points out that an electric toothbrush is a sufficient substitute.
Toothpaste
To prevent tooth decay, the ADA advises using a toothpaste that contains fluoride. There are also a number of whitening toothpastes that bear the ADA seal that may subtly reduce extrinsic staining. These toothpastes include ingredients that act as polishing agents or chemicals to help dissolve stains on the teeth.
Dental Floss
Your toothbrush can reach surfaces, but it won't remove plaque and food debris trapped between your teeth. The ADA advises using dental floss once a day. The Mayo Clinic advises that you select waxed dental floss if the space between your teeth is extremely tight. Alternately, you can use an interdental cleaner (a pick or stick designed to remove debris between your teeth).
Mouthwash
Mouthwash isn't mandatory, but it can be helpful in curbing halitosis (bad breath) and washing away bacteria that cause plaque, says Dr. Robert Danoff, MSN health and fitness expert. According to the ADA, studies show that using fluoride mouthwash as well as fluoride toothpaste gives you more protection against tooth decay than using a fluoride toothpaste alone.
Other
The best dental care products on the market are no substitute for routine professional care. The ADA advises scheduling regular teeth cleanings and oral examinations with your dentist.
