Retin-A is a prescription-only anti-aging cream. The active ingredient in Retin-A is the topical retionoid tretinoin. Retinoids are a derivative of vitamin A. The Food and Drug Administration has approved tretinoin for treating wrinkles. The regular use of Retin-A can stimulate collagen fibers and diminish fine lines and wrinkles.

Step 1

Wash your skin with a mild cleanser or soap. Use warm water as you gently massage your skin with your fingertips. Do not use a wash cloth or sponge because it can be irritating to the skin.

Step 2

Pat your skin dry with a soft towel. Wait until your skin is completely dry before applying Retin-A to your skin. This usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Step 3

Place a pea-sized amount of Retin-A on your fingers. Lightly dab the cream over your face, avoiding areas close to your eyes. Rub Retin-A into your skin gently until it disappears.

Step 4

Apply Retin-A every night. It typically takes seven weeks of regular use to begin to see its anti-wrinkle effects. Use Retin-A continuously to ensure its benefits are maintained.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use Retin-A cream only as prescribed by your doctor. During the first few weeks of treatment you may experience redness, peeling, itching, peeling and stinging.
  • Retin-A may cause your skin to be more sensitive to the sun. Always apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher 30 minutes before going outdoors. Do not use vitamin A derivatives if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant because they increase the risk of birth defects.
