Three-on-three basketball is a way for basketball players to get their fill of the game if they are not playing full-court basketball with full five-on-five teams. Three-on-three basketball is often played in tournament form and also on many college and high-school campuses as an intramural sport. Standings are kept and rules are enforced on the honor system because games are self-officiated.

Game Length

Three-on-three basketball is played to a score of 15 with a time limit of 20 minutes. The winning team must be ahead by two points. If the game is tied at 15-15, overtime is played and the first team to get to 18 points and be ahead by two points wins. If the teams are still tied, the first team to 19 points wins. Shots taken from inside the three-point line are worth one point. Shots takes from outside the arc are worth two points.

Rules of the Game

The ball must be taken back to the top of the semi-circle behind the free throw line on every change of possession. A change of possession includes the rebound of a missed shot, a steal, an out-of-bounds play or a foul by any member of the offensive team. Any foul by a defensive player results in the offensive team maintaining possession. There are no free throws in three-on-three basketball.

Player Rules

All players on a three-on-three basketball roster must be registered prior to the start of the season. Teams can have as many as five players on the roster and need a minimum of three. If a player quits a team in the middle of the season, a replacement player can be added to the roster. All players must check in at the scorer's table before entering the game. If there is no scorer's table, all new players must announce themselves to the opposition while time is out.
