Feeling dizzy or lightheaded is a common symptom during pregnancy for many women. During pregnancy a woman's body goes through many changes, and will react to each of these changes in one way or another. Although dizziness is more common during the first trimester, it is possible for this sensation to occur throughout the duration of the pregnancy. If persistent dizziness occurs or if other symptoms like blurred vision, palpitations or vaginal bleeding and/or abdominal pain occur with dizziness, it is important to contact a health care provider immediately.

Hormones

During pregnancy rapidly elevating hormones cause blood vessels to enlarge in order to increase blood flow to the baby. As a result, the return of blood in the veins to the mother's body slows down and causes blood pressure levels to fall below normal. When blood pressure is low, the amount of blood flowing to the brain can be reduced, which in turn can cause temporary spells of dizziness. To minimize these episodes, avoid rising or getting up quickly when sitting or laying down.

Low Blood Sugar

Low blood sugar levels are a common part of pregnancy while the body adapts to metabolism changes. Dizziness is a common symptom that occurs when blood sugar levels drop. Women who are anemic or who have varicose veins may be more vulnerable to dizzy spells than others. Efforts to maintain blood sugar levels by eating regularly throughout the day, and avoiding long periods between meals, can help to keep dizziness at bay.

Second Trimester Dizziness

During the second trimester, the growing uterus places increased pressure on the body's blood vessels which can hamper proper blood circulation. This in turn can cause sensations of lightheadedness and dizziness. Help maintain blood circulation by keeping your feet moving while standing and avoid standing for long periods of time. It is also wise to wear loose clothing that does not restrict circulation.

Late Pregnancy Dizziness

Dizziness is also a common phenomenon during the middle of the second trimester into the third. This phenomena is often the result of lying on your back which places the pressure of the baby's weight directly onto the vena cava, a huge vein that carries blood from the lower body to the heart. To avoid this sensation, avoid resting on your back from the middle of the second trimester until delivery.
