Facial peels help exfoliate dead skin cells, loosening and peeling them away while lifting dirt from pores and stimulating collagen production. If you apply a peel after opening your pores with a brief hot towel treatment, the peel will be that much more effective. The sky's the limit once you get creative with homemade beauty recipes, but it's best to start with a basic formula and then experiment by adding your own favorite ingredients. Incorporate facial peels into your beauty routine once a week, at most.

Step 1

Combine 1 tbsp. of plain gelatin powder and 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetable juice in a medium, non-metal bowl. Which fruit or vegetable juice you use depends on your skin type. If you have oily skin, use tomato, lemon, orange, lime or grapefruit juice. Cranberry and carrot juices are beneficial for all skin types. Apricot, apple, raspberry, papaya, pear and peach juices are good for dry skin.

Step 2

Mix the gelatin and juice together. Microwave the mixture, checking every 20 seconds, until the gelatin is fully dissolved in the juice.

Step 3

Place the bowl in the refrigerator and give it a quick stir every five minutes after 15 minutes have passed. When the gelatin is noticeably thicker but not yet fully set---usually after 20 to 30 minutes---remove it from the refrigerator.

Step 4

Wet a towel with warm water---as hot as you can comfortably tolerate when in contact with your face---and squeeze out the excess water. Apply this warm towel to your face for two to three minutes to help open your pores. Pat your skin dry with a soft, dry towel.

Step 5

Dip your fingers in the gelatin and smooth it across your face in a light layer, staying away from your eyebrows and hairline. Leave it in place for 20 to 30 minutes or until the mask is no longer tacky to the touch.

Step 6

Peel the mask away from your skin, starting at your forehead and working down. Rinse your face with cool water to help close the pores, then pat dry.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you don't want to use gelatin, use one stiffly beaten egg white as a base for the mask, then add pureed fruit or vegetable chosen according to the guidelines provided in Step 1.

Things You'll Need
