Whether male or female, or young or old, almost everyone is concerned with the way their skin looks. This is because the skin on our faces is so visible; it's the first thing that hundreds of people may notice each day. Although some people are born with beautiful skin and never seem to have any problems, others face such skin problems as severe acne, rashes and wrinkles. Whether your genetics gave you great skin or not, you can still attain great looking skin by maintaining proper hygiene and using the right facial products.
Step 1
Wear sun screen daily in order to protect your skin from sun damage. Whether it's cold or hot outside, sunny or rainy, protection from the sun's harmful UV rays is essential. The Nemours Foundation states that wearing a sunscreen with a strength (SPF) of 15 or higher is important every day that you go outside. This will help to protect your skin from damage that shows up as sun spots, discoloration and wrinkles. The Nemours Foundation also recommends using a sunscreen that is "noncomedogenic." These products won't clog pores or cause acne.
Step 2
Avoid such unhealthy habits as smoking and tanning. According to the Mayo Clinic, smoking cigarettes restricts the blood vessels in your skin, which makes your skin appear thinner. It also reduces the amount of collagen in your skin so smokers are more likely to have saggy and wrinkly skin. Even though a dark, tan color is sought after in the United States, it's healthier to get that image without actually using the sun. The Nemours Foundation recommends using self-tanning lotions that don't have any UV rays instead of going to the tanning salon or lying in the sun to get darker. Tanning can lead to burns, discoloration of the skin and wrinkles.
Step 3
Wash your face to maintain proper hygiene to treat and prevent breakouts. The Nemours Foundation recommends washing your face every morning and night with a mild cleanser. Do not wash your face more than twice a day, as this may break the delicate top layer of your skin or cause irritation. Remove makeup before going to bed, if you wear any, because leaving it on overnight can clog pores.
Step 4
Treat your skin to wrinkle-fighting moisturizers every night, regardless of your age. Retinol is a vitamin A compound that helps to fight the free radicals, which are unstable oxygen molecules that break down skin cells and cause wrinkles. The Mayo Clinic states that creams with retinol can help to prevent and treat wrinkles, and it can also decrease acne. Moisturizers with such ingredients as green tea extract can also help reduce fine lines and plump up your skin.
