Waxing is a hair removal method that is preferred by some because the results are longer lasting than some other hair removal methods. However, there is a chance of ingrown hairs after waxing, as is the case with most hair removal methods. Ingrown hairs that are present after waxing usually occur when a piece of hair begins to grow through the hair follicle. This, according to the Mayo Clinic, is known as transfollicular penetration.
Symptoms
Ingrown hairs that occur after waxing usually present as an area of irritation. There may be a red bump present. The bump may contain pus in some cases. Itching and pain in the area are also common because of the irritation.
Cause
Waxing causes the hair shaft to break below the surface of the skin. There is a chance that the hair won't grow back directly out of the hair follicle, especially if you have curly hair or curved hair follicles. If the hair doesn't grow out of the follicle, it will grow into the follicle wall, which is one form of an ingrown hair. If the hair does grow up out of the follicle, there is still a risk of an ingrown hair. The hair may begin to curl around and breach the skin once it is above skin level; this is known as extrafollicular penetration.
Treatments
Warm compresses may help the ingrown hair to heal. An over the counter anti-itch cream may help to minimize the itching in the area. If the hair is embedded in the skin, as is the case with most transfollicular penetration ingrown hairs, you won't be able to remove the ingrown hair and may need to see a doctor if it doesn't begin to improve on its own. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotics, retinoids or corticosteroids to help control the ingrown hairs.
Prevention/Solution
The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology states that the only way to prevent ingrown hairs is to allow your hair to grow. However, you can also try alternate hair removal methods, such as shaving, laser hair removal or chemical hair removal to see if you get as many ingrown hairs when using one of the alternative hair removal methods.
Complications
You may get an infection if you scratch at the ingrown hair or try to pick out an embedded ingrown hair. You may develop a permanent scar in severe cases. Hyperpigmentation, or darkening of the skin, is possible for people with dark skin.
