The uterus is a hollow organ in the pelvis area that supports a growing baby. The lining of the uterus has two types of tissues: the endometrium, which is the inner layer, and the myometrium, which is the outer muscle layer. Most commonly, according to the National Cancer Institute, uterine cancer begins in the endometrium. More rarely, cancer begins in the muscle layer of the uterus, and is called sarcoma. Multiple symptoms are associated with uterine cancer.

Bleeding

The most common symptom of uterine cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute, is abnormal vaginal bleeding. Merck Manuals, an online medical library, notes that abnormal bleeding is an early symptom of uterine cancer. Bleeding that occurs between menstrual periods, and periods in which the flow is heavier or lasts longer than normal are also symptoms of possible uterine cancer. Uterine cancer most commonly affects women between the ages of 50 to 65, an age group including women who have gone through menopause. Thus, any bleeding after a woman has gone through menopause may be a symptom of uterine cancer. Merck Manuals notes that one in three postmenopausal women who have vaginal bleeding has uterine cancer. At first the bleeding may be thin and watery, but contains more blood over time.

Urination

According to the Mayo Clinic, women with uterine cancer may experience a vaginal discharge that is not bloody. You should bring any abnormal discharge to the attention of a medical professional.

Pain

Uterine cancer can cause pain, especially in the pelvic area. Pain may also occur during intercourse. According to the National Cancer Institute, pain resulting from uterine cancer may occur during urination.

A Change in Weight

Uterine cancer may cause unintended weight loss, despite regular appetite and eating habits. If you experience sudden, unexplained weight loss, consult your physician.
