Lavender essential oil is one of the most versatile essential oils. It is easy and gentle to use. Lavender is suitable for use by many people including the elderly, babies and children. When incorporated into lotions, lavender can have many benefits. Consult an experienced aromatherapist before using lavender if you are unfamiliar with the use of essential oils.

Analgesic

Lavender is an analgesic which means it is useful in helping to relieve a number of aches and pains. Patricia Davis, author of the book "Aromatherapy, An A -- Z", recommends massaging lavender lotion into the temples to relieve headaches. Lavender reduces pain locally and reduces inflammation. Shirley and Len Price, in their book "Aromatherapy for Health Professionals," cite the use of lavender to relieve pain associated with rheumatism, arthritis and muscular aches.

Calming Effects

Another of lavender's benefits is the ability to calm and sedate. Lavender is extremely effective in treating the symptoms of depression, insomnia and stress. It also reduces high blood pressure. Davis recommends massaging the sides of the spine with lavender to help to balance emotions and fluctuating moods. Caution should be taken not to overuse lavender as it might have the opposite effect.

Anti-inflammatory Properties

Lavender is extremely beneficial for skin care due to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Use lavender to help with a number of skin-related problems such as acne, eczema, dermatitis, sores, sun burn and wounds. Lavender is suitable for all skin types. Apply lavender lotion on a daily basis as part of a skin care routine to protect, heal and rejuvenate the skin.

Antiseptic and Bactericidal Effects

As lavender is both antiseptic and bactericidal in its actions, it is useful to treat conditions such as colds, flu and sinusitis. Davis recommends massaging lavender lotion on the neck, temples and nose to relieve the congestion of colds, coughs and flu.

Insect Repellent

Julia Lawless, in her book "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils," states that lavender is well established in its use as a traditional insect repellent. Lavender has insecticidal properties which repel insects. Apply lavender lotion to the skin to protect against mosquitoes and other biting insects. Lavender can also be used to treat insect bites.

Benefits for Women

Lavender is used to treat female problems such as PMS and those associated with childbirth. Apply lavender lotion to the lower abdomen to reduce the pain of menstruation. Lavender can also be used to increase scanty periods. Use lavender during labor to reduce the pain of contractions. Davis recommends massaging lavender into the the lower back during labor. Seek professional advice, however, before using lavender in childbirth and be aware of any individual circumstances which may contraindicate use of lavender.
