Tennis is a game of great athleticism and instincts. Players may be on the run constantly throughout the game and it provides an excellent workout. Public courts make it fairly easy to find a place to play. You will need to bring your equipment with you, carrying it in a tennis bag along with water, a towel and perhaps a change of clothes.

Tennis Racket

The tennis racket has undergone dramatic changes since it was made of wood through the mid-1970s. After that, materials like aluminum, titanium, boron and graphite were used as manufacturers tried to find the best way to construct rackets. Since the mid-1990s, the majority of rackets have been made with ceramics and graphite because of their strength, stiffness and ability to reduce vibrations. Less vibration means less injury to the elbow. Many players use oversized rackets that have a hitting area of 106 to 122 square inches.

Tennis Balls

Tennis balls have a diameter of between 2.5 and 2.7 inches and weigh approximately 2 oz., according to the International Tennis Federation. Most balls are optic yellow in color although white balls are also approved for competition. Tennis balls have a rubber surface, are filled with air and have a felt cover.

Tennis Shoes

Tennis shoes appear to have the look of other athletic shoes, such as those worn by basketball players. However, the tennis shoe has a flatter surface on the bottom. This allows players to slide on the flat surfaces of the court. In order to hit each shot in the prescribed manner, a player may have to run at full speed and then slide before hitting it. Players will not have the opportunity to slow down and that's why sliding is necessary.
