According to Dr. Anthony John Arciola, a urologist in Scarsdale, New York, most men ejaculate between 1 and 5.6 mL of semen per ejaculation. Most men with low semen volume have either an infection, or an anatomical or hormone problem. Arciola advises that foods usually do not affect the amount of semen produced. However, he also states that increasing the consumption of water, certain amino acids, zinc, folic acid and lycopine can increase semen volume in some men.
Water
Most people don't drink as much water as the body requires, Arciola says. To produce a healthy amount of semen, a man needs to drink eight to 10 glasses of water each day. Dehydration causes the body to limit semen production.
Amino Acids
The amino acids L-arginine, L-lysine and L-carnitine help increase the amount of semen, according to AskMen.com. These amino acids also play a roll in the mobility and quality of sperm. To get these amino acids you need to eat meat, granola, oatmeal, nuts, dairy products, spinach, seaweed, tuna, or egg whites, advises Arciola.
Zinc
When you consume the above listed amino acids along with zinc, semen volume may increase significantly, Arciola says. Eating oysters, nuts, seeds wheat, barley, red meat, turkey and lamb will help to increase your zinc intake, advises MaleEnhancement.org. Discovery Health advises that zinc also increases the levels of testosterone in the body.
Folic Acid
Fruits and vegetables high in folic acid can also benefit a man by increasing semen production, according to MaleEnhancement.org. Foods high in folic acid include citrus fruits and green vegetables, such as broccoli, okra and asparagus.
Lycopine
Lycopine can increase the thickness of semen as well as the volume of semen, Arciola says. The antioxidant properties of lycopine assist in decreasing free radicals that might damage sperm health as well. Pink grapefruit, tomatoes, red bell peppers and guava contain high amounts of lycopine.
