There are several different types of arthritis, and many of them have different root causes. Some are caused by inflamed cartilage, and others are the result of a disorder that causes the body to attack its own joints. Arthritis can cause pain, stiffness, swelling and restricted movement. Naturopathy is an alternative therapy that originated in Europe and focuses on reducing side effects through natural remedies such as herbal treatments and massages. Naturopathic physicians develop treatment plans based on an individual's medical history, current issues and current medications.
Step 1
Stay away from foods that contain alkaloids, which can increase inflammation according to altMD. Alkaloids can be found in sugar, dairy products, caffeine and fried foods. Instead, consume a lot of kale, celery, lettuce, almonds, pineapple and blackberries. A low-fat diet with a lot of fiber can reduce weight, lowering strain on joints.
Step 2
Talk to your doctor about lubricating injections. Prolozone and hyaluronic acid can be injected into the joints to relieve pain and are suggested by altMD. Look for a licensed naturopathic physician to do this.
Step 3
Exercise in the water. This is referred to as hydrotherapy and is recommended by Natural Health Cure. Swimming and other water aerobic exercises can relieve arthritic pain because the buoyancy of the water releases the amount of weight and strain on joints.
Step 4
Apply a warm compress, such as a heating pad, to the areas affected by pain. This is recommended by Health Communities as a treatment. Leave the compress on the area for 20 to 30 minutes each day.
Step 5
Discuss herbal medicines with your naturopathic physician. Herbs can interact negatively with other medications, and at the wrong dose can cause side effects such as headache or upset stomach. For this reason, Health Communities recommends that herbs should be taken under the care and supervision of a medical professional. Black cohosh, chaparral and yucca are all anti-inflammatory herbs.
