Ingrown hairs are a painful condition that is caused by shaving. They cause painful pimple-like bumps that may itch. Regardless of the type of razor you use to shave, you must ensure that the area is properly lubricated using pre-shave lotion or shaving gel. Dry shaving increases your risk of ingrown hairs.
Electric Razor
The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology states that electric razors are a good option for people who are prone to ingrown hairs. These razors don't shave as close to the skin as traditional razors, which minimizes the risk of ingrown hairs.
Single Blade Safety Razor
Using a single blade razor to shave is suggested by the Mayo Clinic. Multi-bladed razors lift the hair up with the first blade and then the following blades shave the hair. Single blade razors don't do this. The single blade cuts the hair as it is. Some ingrown hairs are caused by the hair being cut too close to the surface of the skin or by being cut beneath the surface of the skin.
Straight Razor
A straight razor is a good razor to prevent ingrown hairs as long as it is sharp. Dull razors can irritate the skin and increase the risk of ingrown hairs developing. These razors require a little more caution to use than safety razors because of the unprotected blade, so this isn't an option if you are in a rush or in a dimly lit area.
