The plant that helps ease the pain of a sunburn has properties that make it an effective way to help maintain health, researchers at the Mayo Clinic say. Aloe vera capsules can help ease digestive discomforts, cleanse the body of impurities and may help prevent lung cancer, researchers at the U.S. National Institutes of Health report.

Cleans the GI Tract

The website All 4 Natural Health touts aloe vera supplements for their ability to aid in digestive function. Aloe vera contains fatty acids with anti-inflammatory properties that help the stomach, small intestine and colon function properly. Aloe also contains enzymes that help stimulate digestion and fight constipation, diarrhea and other common digestive disorders while increasing the body's ability to absorb nutrients more efficiently, researchers at Aloe Vera Health Benefits report.

Cleanses the Body

A major benefit of aloe supplements is their ability to help improve circulation by dilating blood vessels and helping with the growth of blood cells. The website Aloe Vera Research reports that aloe also works as an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent in the body, helping to protect against disease. Amino acids found in the aloe plant aid in the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates, preventing the build-up of fat in arteries that can result in cardiovascular disease.

Immune System

A recently-discovered compound in aloe, acemannan, is being studied for its ability to boost the levels of T-lymphocyte cells, researchers at All 4 Natural Health report. The researchers tout the benefits of aloe supplements because aloe contains numerous vitamins, minerals and enzymes that have been shown to help the body fight disease.

Cancer Prevention

Researchers at the U.S. National Institutes of Health say preliminary studies indicate that supplementing the diet with aloe capsules may be an effective way to aid in the prevention of some forms of cancer, including lung cancer. While preliminary tests are encouraging, doctors at the Mayo Clinic caution that more extensive studies are needed before this can be scientifically proven.

Weight Loss

Enzymes contained in the aloe plant have been shown to increase the metabolic rate in liver cells, resulting in the body burning more energy when digesting food, researchers report in American Chronicle. This extra energy consumption aids in weight loss and muscle development.
