The bacterium Lactobacillus acidophilus, commonly used in yogurts and other cultured foods, is the most extensively researched form of probiotic available. Many of the benefits associated with acidophilus have been well documented by scientific investigations; however, some have not been extensively researched. For example, according to the National Institutes of Health, there is no compelling evidence to support the idea that acidophilus can treat AIDS, inflammatory bowel disease or mouth sores. Consult your health care provider before using acidophilus, particularly if you have a serious medical condition.
Vaginal Health
Lactobacillus acidophilus helps to support the balance of healthy bacteria in the vagina. The National Institutes of Health cites "good scientific evidence" supporting the use of acidophilus to treat bacterial vaginosis. Acidophilus may also help to prevent or treat vaginal yeast infections.
Diarrhea Treatment
The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that acidophilus can treat diarrhea from several different causes. Acidophilus is highly effective as a treatment for rotavirus-related diarrhea in children. Probiotics can also defend against traveler's diarrhea in adults.
Antibiotic Support
Integrative health care providers frequently recommend acidophilus as a complementary treatment for people taking antibiotics. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that acidophilus can ease diarrhea associated with antibiotics. Acidophilus also helps to support the flora balance within the colon and may prevent secondary yeast infections, a common complication associated with antibiotics.
Allergy Treatment
Acidophilus and other probiotics may provide some defense against seasonal allergies. The National Institutes of Health states that people with cedar pollen allergies have fewer symptoms if they are taking the L-92 strain of acidophilus. Probiotics are also a possible treatment for eczema, hives and other allergy-related conditions. More studies are needed in this area.
